Galp, Suzano and Vibra form partnership to scale up sustainable aviation fuels
Through a cluster created by Bolder, a corporate innovation consultancy, the three companies have come together to investigate and study the potential for using sustainable aviation fuels on a large scale. Galp joins the project as a fuel producer, while Suzano and Vibra have the role of biomass producer and distributor, respectively.
The program was launched during the Web Summit Rio on April 15th, and in the first phase, which will last a year, executives from the three companies will meet every 15 days to exchange information on the SAF study they are carrying out. In a second phase, the idea is to prototype ways of making production viable. Finally, in a third phase, they intend to make agreements for various purposes, such as direct investment in startups or even forming a joint investment fund.
At the moment, the biggest challenge for airlines to adopt SAF is the high cost of the solution, which is between 2 and 5 more costly than traditional fuel. Even so, it is the most viable solution for meeting the CO2 emission reduction targets and regulations.
It is hoped that this partnership will enable prototypes to be made that make mass production of sustainable fuel feasible.
