Galp develops underwater robot with cutting-edge technology

It's called RovScan and it's a remotely operated underwater vehicle for inspecting offshore oil and gas pipework.

Diving at a speed of 25 metres per minute and equipped with ultrasound technology, this robot inspects flexible pipes in seconds, compared to solutions on the market that do the same job in longer, indicating anomalies and generating data in real time. The concept was developed from scratch by Galp's innovation team, in partnership with Petrobras, Ativatec and ISQ.

Managing the integrity of these structures is one of the major challenges in oil exploration. If, on the one hand, compliance with material life indicators can take pipes in good condition out of operation, on the other hand, undue prolongation can result in the interruption of exploration or incidents.

RovScan was successfully tested in three offshore campaigns, where it was subjected to extreme conditions of depth (3000 metres) and pressure (200 bar).

The transformation of Galp's portfolio is driven by investments in innovation and development of more than €150 million and a solid link to the entrepreneurial ecosystem and universities.
